Special Education Instructional Assistant

Job Goal: To implement the educational programs developed by the Special Education teacher.  Assist certified teachers in implementing instructional practices, transitional activities, maintaining a safe and supportive instructional environment, and communicating and collaborating with teachers and other professionals to ensure special education students obtain quality instruction.

Terms of Employment: Compensation will be determined based on 181 contract days on the board-approved salary schedule. This position requires a 7-hour workday.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

1. Three years of paid or volunteer experience as an instructional assistant, preferably assigned to writing, reading, and math instructional processes.  
2. Must have a minimum of an Associate of Arts or higher degree, or an 80% or better on the Kentucky Paraeducator Assessment (KPA). 

Performance Responsibilities:

1. Aid instructional personnel with the presentation of learning concepts and materials in the conduct of writing, reading, and math instructional exercises. 
2. Skillfully tutor individual and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up writing, reading, and math skill development learning activities. 
3. Monitor and assist students in instructional writing, reading and math skill development drills, practice, and study activities. 
4. Manage student behavior through the use of motivational and positive reinforcement strategies and techniques.  
5. Prepare a variety of writing, reading and math skill development materials and learning aids.
6. Maintain a variety of records and files pertaining to student records and information, particularly pertaining to writing, reading, and math skill development progress. 
7. Operate and aid students in the operation of a variety of instructional media, machines, and computer equipment.
8. Administer and score criterion-referenced writing, reading, and math aptitude tests, and record the results.  
9. Administer routine first aid and request assistance for serious illness or injury.
10. Collect, assemble, catalogue, and distribute writing, reading, and skill development resource materials. 
11. Assist therapists (PT, OT, Speech, etc.) in following up with therapy as instructed in consultation with the therapist and under the direction of the supervising teacher per the IEP. 
12. Assist in the management of the student’s behavior when s/he is exhibiting inappropriate and/or physically aggressive behavior.  This may include assisting students who are at risk of harming themselves or others through implementation of Safe Crisis Management. 
13. Adhere to professional ethics and standards, which include maintaining the strictest confidentiality.  
14. Assist in maintaining an orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment. 
15. Participate in parent conferences as requested.  
16. Regular and punctual attendance.
17. Other duties as assigned by the school administration.  

Physical Demands

1. Work is performed while standing, sitting, and/or walking.
2. Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing. 
3. Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
4. Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing and reaching. 
5. Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light to heavy objects.
6. Assist students with self-care, including diapering, toileting, bathing, dressing, etc.
